கேரளாவில் குறைந்து வரும் கிறிஸ்தவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை

ஒருவரை ஒரு நாள் ஏமாற்றலாம். இரு நாள் ஏமாற்றலாம். ஆனால் பல நாட்கள் ஒரு சமுதாயத்தையே ஏமாற்ற முடியாது. இந்த உண்மையை புதியதாக உணர்ந்திருப்பது கேரளாவில் உள்ள கிறிஸ்தவ தேவாலயங்களை நடத்தும் இந்திய தேச துரோக பாதிரியார்கள். தற்போதுள்ள நிலவரப்படி கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு மதம்மாறும் மக்களின் எண்ணிக்கை பல மடங்காக குறைந்துள்ளது.

இந்த எண்ணிக்கைகள் கேரள தேச துரோக பாதிரியார்களை வருத்தமடைய செய்துள்ளது. இதனால், தங்கள் யூதர்களின் கலப்பின வம்சாவளியை பெருக்க மாற்று வழிகளை கடைப்பிடிக்க ஆராய்ந்து வருகின்றனர். கிறிஸ்தவர்கள் நிறைய பிள்ளைகளை பெற்றுக் கொள்ளுமாறு கிறிஸ்தவ சாமியார்கள் மக்களிடம் மன்றாடி வருகின்றனர். சில பத்தாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் அயல் நாட்டு பணத்தில் தங்களுக்கு தாங்களே தங்க அபிஷேகம் செய்து கொண்ட இவர்கள், இன்று போதிய வருவாய் இல்லாமல் வறுமையில் வாடுகின்றனராம். ஆனாலும் நிறைய பிள்ளைகளை பெற்று தங்கள் இனத்தை பெருக்க முயற்சி மேற்கொள்வது காளை மாட்டில் பால் கறக்க முயற்சிப்பது போன்றதாகும். கிடைக்குமா இவர்களுக்கு காளை மாட்டு பால ? காலம் இவர்களை பக்குவபடுத்தும்.

மேலும் துலுக்கர்கள் அமோகமாக அதிக குழந்தைகள் பெற்று தங்கள் அரேபிய கலப்பினத்தை வெற்றிகரமாக பெருக்கி வருகின்றனர். தற்போது 18 சதவிகித கிறிஸ்துவர்களும், 27 சதவிகித துலுக்கர்களும் கேரளாவில் வாழந்து வருகிறார்களாம்.

Chennai June 12: Christian community leaders in Kerala are a worried lot. Christians who were second to the Hindus in the overall population of God’s Own Country, have fallen to the third spot below the Muslims. "Christians in Kerala, which is the cradle of Christianity in India, face a ‘Parsi Syndrome’ because of dwindling population," said Father Paul Thelekkat, official spokesman of the Catholic Church, popularly known as the Syro-Malabar Church.
Taken aback by the drastic decrease in the Christian population, the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council has exhorted its flock to ‘produce more children’. Father Thelekkat told Deccan Chronicle that the Church was thinking of offering financial and social aid to those who go for more children. "Only due to economic factors Christians chose to downsize their families and resorted to family planning methods," he pointed out. "All factions of the Christian religion are facing lower birth rate. Martho-mites are the worst affected, followed by both the factions of the Orthodox Church, Syro-Malabar and the Latin Catholics. This has caused apprehension among the community leaders," said Fr Thelekkat.
"A survey held by the Church has shown that while there were three baptisms for every marriage registered in the church twenty five years ago, presently there are only 0.9 baptism for every marriage registered,"said Father The-lekkat. Another study blamed the high level of migration by the Christian population for its dipping numbers. The spurt in the number of Muslims and the fall in Christian population had made Cardinal Varkey Mar Vithayathil, the president of the Catholic Bishop Council of India to remark that Kerala would soon become a Muslim dominated state.
According to the latest figures available, Christians constitute just 18 per cent of the population in the state while Muslims form 27 per cent. Even delimitation has gone in favour of Muslims. "While the Malabar region has gained four additional seats, the central Travancore which is a Christian stronghold has lost six assembly seats," said Hari Kartha, a political commentator.
